Sillyness in science is better than in the Senate

Reading about scientific research from respected universities is a sure recipe for laughter.

With so many awful things occurring in politics, a sure recipe for laughter is to read about "scientific" research from respected universities. Conclusions: the male brain sees a faceless woman in a bikini as an object. Left-handed individuals have poorer school performance - and the most maladjusted are ambidextrous girls. Gay genes excite women. Playing is good for children. Results vary from the obvious to the unbelieveable and prejudiced. How does one find so much funding for such sillyness?

This torrent of conclusions, based on interviews and in brain MRIs, como dressed in a mantle of credibility. The "object-woman" one, for example. It was "an experiment in the US with 21 heterossexual graduate students, presented in Chigago at the American Association for the Advancement of Science". Advancement? The study, done with just a few "Joes", confirmed that "when observing a sensual body destitute of identity" - that is to say, a hot babe in a a bikini and with her face hidden - "the brain circuits activated in men are the same ones that are activated when observing a tool, an inanimate object". If a woman looks at the picture of a muscular man, wearing just swimming trunks and with no head, she will probably view him as an object as well. Even more creative are the implications of the research. According to psychologyst Susan Fiske, from Princeton University, from this study one can deduce that "a male employer may benefit certain female co-workers in detriment of the other employees in the company, depending upon how he idealizes that body". So much time wasted.

As the new President of the United States, Barack Obama, signs all documents with the left hand, it is, at the very least, innoportune of the recent research to state that "left-handers do worse at school because they are a maladjusted bunch with a ower IQ". It was an ample study, with 10 thousand children, from Bristol University in England. Girls go even worse because, according to the researchers, "there is no sense of overcoming among girls who write with the left hand". And the ambidextrous would not develop all of their psychomotor skills. Since I am a woman, ambidextrous, and write only with the left hand, this study could have devastated my self-esteem. It would be tragic, if it were not comic.

Very quickly comes along another research in which I cannot fit myself into. At the University of Queensland, in Australia, they proved that gay genes drive women mad. How so? Gentle and sensitive men attract women, that everyone knows, why research it? And vice-versa. But gentleness is not a female nor homossexual trait. Researcher Brendan Zietsch went further. He researched 5 thousand male and female twins to conclude that the siblings of homossexuals or lesbians would be the most attractive. The things statictics allow themselves to be used for...

A new research from the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, in New York, proved that children who have a 15 minute break to play at school are less disorderly and learn more than those who confined to a classroom all day long. This study involved more than 10 thousand children betwen 8 and 9 years of age. To prove what every human being already knows. That retaining someone of any age inside a classroom or conference for many hours makes it harder to concentrate and to absorb knowledge.

Whoever thinks that these wacky researchers are the exception should access the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ig_Nobel_Prize_winners. The IgNobel Award is a self-evident parody of the Nobel. Here are the hilarious conclusion of some of the research from 2008: fleas that live on dogs jump higher than those who live on cats; Coca-cola is an efficient spermicide; strippers make more money during their fertile periods; expensive fake medication is more efficient than cheap fake medication; food is tastier when it sounds more attractive; lumps of hair or strands inevitably intertwine.

It is much healthier than reading about the Senate, Sarney, Collor, and Renan Calheiros. It is scientifically proven.
